Open auto transport

Open car transport is how the majority of vehicles in the US are shipped, from used sedans to brand-new inventory heading to dealerships.

What is open auto transport?

Your vehicle is driven onto a multi-car carrier with no walls or roof. Hydraulic ramps allow cars to be loaded on two levels, and each one is strapped down at the tires. A typical open hauler carries between six and ten vehicles.

What to keep in mind

The car is exposed to weather and road dust on the way. Damage is uncommon, but if your vehicle is a collector piece, very low, or has fresh paint, enclosed transport is the safer choice.

Prepare your car for open transport

1. Wash it so existing scratches and dings are easy to see during inspection.
2. Remove toll tags and personal items. Carrier insurance does not cover belongings left inside.
3. Leave about a quarter tank of fuel.
4. Fold in mirrors, retract antennas and secure loose parts.
5. Note any warning lights or mechanical issues for the driver.
